Mahler\u2019s enthusiasm for the humour in Sterne\u2019s magnum opus\u00a0<em>Tristram Shandy\u00a0<\/em>(1759\u201367) also places him in a wider context of musico-literary intersections stretching from Scarlatti, CPE Bach, and Haydn, to Beethoven, Wagner, and Wolf. Sterne\u2019s radical comedic deployment of narrative digression, interruption, Illusionsst\u00f6rung, and eccentric prose has particularly strong resonance with Mahler\u2019s subversive musical idiolect. Both share a preoccupation with self-referentiality, using convention against itself, and for intrusive gestures that undermine hermetic systems. Examples demonstrate Mahler\u2019s manipulation of material in Sterne-like musical puns, comic incongruities, and narrative games.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jeremy Barham\u00a0<\/strong>is Emeritus Professor of Music at the University of Surrey, UK, where he is also Director of the\u00a0<a id=\"LPlnk655292\" title=\"https:\/\/iagmr.org\/\" href=\"https:\/\/iagmr.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Institute of Austrian and German Music Research<\/a>.
