Taking examples from the second and fifth chapters, the author will reveal how Weill’s formal experiments in both Germany and the United States paved the way for these composers as they forged an indigenous movement in sophisticated, socially engaged music theatre. The lecture will also engage with the principles of Harold Bloom’s Anxiety of Influence and other modes of intertextuality that provide the basis for Weill, Blitzstein and Bernstein.

Vortrag/Buchpräsentation mit Musik:
Kurt Weill: Die Dreigroschenoper, No. 6 “Seeräuberjenny”
Marc Blitzstein: The Cradle Will Rock, Sc. 7 “Nickel under the Foot”
Johanna Stacher (Gesang), Chanda VanderHart (Klavier)

Seilerstätte 26, 1010 Wien, Raum A 0201

Die Veranstaltungsreihe »Music, Culture & Politics in Central Europe.
