SUMMARY:Rhythm under the Microscope II: An Interdisciplinary Conference on Microrhythm and Tempo Variability in Popular Music
DESCRIPTION:In September 2024\, scholars gathered at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna for Rhythm Under the Microscope\, a conference examining microrhythm and groove in popular music. Keynote speakers Anne Danielsen and Justin London explored the effects of a variety of parameters on the perception of microrhythm as well as the relationship between rhythm and microtiming. Other paper presentations and workshops further examined aspects of timing\, groove\, and aesthetics. \nRhythm Under the Microscope II is a sequel to the 2024 conference\, providing an opportunity for renewed study of microrhythm\, including scholarly advances since the first conference\, but also opening up to discussions of tempo variability. The conference seeks to bring together musicians and scholars from various disciplines to connect their different perspectives and further the current state of microrhythm\, tempo variability\, and groove research. \nParticipation is free of charge\, but registration is required: https://ipop.at/rhythm/

SUMMARY:Gastvortrag | Quynh Trinh Nguyen-Koschera (Universität Heidelberg): "Neurobehavioral Coordination in Live Mother–Infant Musical Interactions"
DESCRIPTION:“Neurobehavioral Coordination in Live Mother–Infant Musical Interactions” \n\n\nMusical interactions support early social connection\, yet the behavioral and neural mechanisms underlying this process in live caregiver–infant settings remain incompletely understood. This talk integrates evidence on how the quality and communicative function of musical engagement shape mother–infant coordination across the first postnatal year. \nUsing EEG hyperscanning in 84 mother–infant dyads assessed at 3\, 6\, and 12 months\, we examined live music-box play during natural free play\, maternal gaze aversion\, and temporally shuffled music. Disrupting the natural interaction altered maternal tempo\, attenuated infant neural responses\, and reduced interpersonal neural synchrony\, whereas synchrony was consistently highest during natural musical free play. \nComplementing these neural findings\, 3D motion-capture recordings of mothers interacting with their infants revealed function-specific movement patterns during infant-directed music: side-to-side swaying characterized lullabies\, while vertical bouncing characterized playsongs. These patterns could not be explained by tempo alone\, were amplified by infants’ presence\, generalized across Italian and Canadian samples\, and allowed adult observers from diverse cultures to infer song function from movement alone. \nTogether\, these findings show that naturalistic musical interaction coordinates caregiver and infant behaviour and interpersonal communication. They highlight music and movement as integrated channels through which caregivers scaffold infants’ early social and developmental experiences.

DESCRIPTION:Workshop am Wissenschaftszentrum Gustav Mahler und die Wiener Moderne\n(im Rahmen des FWF-Projekts „Max Kalbeck: Networking Practices in Vienna 1900“) \nMit dem Ziel\, neue Perspektiven auf das Thema „Wien um 1900“ auszuloten\, fragt der Workshop nach Beziehungen\, Praktiken und Materialitäten in kulturellen Netzwerken – von den Brahms-Kreisen und der etablierten Musikkultur über Gustav Mahler bis zu den Avantgarde-Zirkeln um Arnold Schönberg. Gerade in der Wiener Moderne\, die in ihrer Vielfalt eine interdisziplinäre Perspektive bedingt\, ist die Musikkultur in enger Vernetzung mit weiteren Künsten zu denken. Förderliche Beziehungen und Allianzen können ebenso im Fokus stehen wie Spaltungen und Kontroversen.
