Masculinities in Wind Music / Männlichkeiten in der Blasmusik
INTERNATIONALE KONFERENZ DO & FR 23./24.10.2025, Institut 12 OberschützenHauptplatz 8, 7432 Oberschützen Keynote by Stefan Horlacher (TU Dresden): „‘Are you a Man or a Mouse?‘ – Masculinity Studies in the 20th and 21st Centuries“ Wind music ensembles, like many comparable groups, including sports, military, business or politics, are traditionally considered male-dominated homosocialities. These are characterized by the fact that they offer masculine connotated solidarity and selfassurance, often coupled with a consciously or unconsciously lived exclusivity, i.e. with different mechanisms of exclusion. Wind music cultures also seem to have specific characteristics based on physical, social, political, and musical criteria. At the international conference, it will be discussed how these clichés came about, whether they are similarly present in different countries and whether they still persist and have an impact. It will also be considered what changes there have been in recent years and what perspectives would be desirable in the future.
